R. William "Bill" Garber

R.W. (Bill) Garber, 89, of Cando, ND passed away on Friday, January 20, 2012 at the Towner County Living Center in Cando, ND.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at United Methodist Church, Cando, ND with Rev. Rick Craig officiating. Visitation will be held at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home on Monday, January 23, 2012 from 4 to 6 pm. Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the spring at the I.O.O. F. Cemetery in Cando, ND.

Bill was born in Cando, ND, on September 28, 1922, the son of Rufus and Ottie (Branner) Garber. He was a member of the Cando Odnacs hockey team and graduated from high school in Cando, ND. In 1942, he married Shirley Hagen. He worked for the Cando Creamery prior to moving to Milwaukee for several years. Upon returning to Cando, Bill worked with his brother Ralph as an electrician, then as a car salesman and manager at the Oldsmobile dealership. He eventually became the owner of Sammy’s Men's Clothing Store in Cando, retiring in 1985. He married Verna Nicholas in 1974. Bill enjoyed golf, travel, and playing cards. Bill was a member of the Cando Fire Department, the Cando Masons, United Methodist Church and served on the First State Bank of Cando Board of Directors for thirty-one years.

He is survived by his wife: Verna; four children: Greg (Rev. Naomi) Garber of Janesville, WI, Bruce (Sheila) Garber of Cando, Dean (Michelle) Garber of Cuba, MO, and Keith (Kim) Garber of Wentzville, MO; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-daughters: Connie Carnes of Huntsville, AL and Colleen (Steve) Tronson of Crystal, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
