Eileen Heardt
Eileen Heardt, 77, Cando, ND entered rest on Sunday, July 4, 2010 at the Towner County Medical Center, Cando.
Eileen Smeltzer was born on September 11, 1932 in Cando, ND to Elmer and Zela (Duffey) Smeltzer. She attended grade school at Prairie Rose Country School and graduated from high school in Cando. Following graduation, Eileen received her education and nurse’s training in Fargo and Jamestown and graduated as a Registered Nurse.
She married Robert Heardt on June 20, 1954. They lived in Ft. Morgan, Colorado. Two daughters were born to them – Teresa and Sharla. The couple returned to North Dakota to farm. Later, they moved to Cando where Eileen continued her nursing at Rest Haven Manor. She served there as Director of Nursing for many years. Bob died in May of 1999.
Eileen was a member of the Cando Church of the Brethren and served faithfully each week in the AWANA children’s program. She served as a caretaker all her life, raising her granddaughter Dana, providing daycare for her great-grandchildren and helping them with Bible memory and school work. She cared for residents in her apartment building as well as other people in the community who needed help. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were an important part of her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharla (Joe) Wallace, Longview, WA; grandchildren Heather and R.J. (Shannon) and great-grandchild, Braden Wallace. Also, her granddaughter, Dana (Justin) Oakland, Cando, and great-grandchildren, Abigail and Austin Oakland. She is also survived by her sister, Beverly (Delbert) Lewallen, Bisbee; and brother, Roland (Karalee) Smeltzer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her daughter, Teresa, a baby boy, Mark, her parents, and two brothers, Norman and Keith.
FuneralService: Friday, July 9,2010 at the Christian Fellowship Church in Cando at 11:00 AM.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
Interment: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando
