Harry E. Bucholz

Harry E. Bucholz, 85, Fargo, ND formerly of Rock Lake, ND died Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Bethany Homes, Fargo.

Harry Eugene Bucholz was born on March 27, 1924 at rural Towner County, ND to Fred and Rachel Bucholz.  He attended grade school at Bryan School, located just one mile from the family farm.  He graduated from Hansboro Public School in 1941.  Following graduation, Harry farmed with his father.  He was drafted into the Army in November of 1945 and was honorably discharged to return to the family farm following his father’s illness.

On June 27, 1947 Harry married Joyce Curtis in Crookston, MN.  To this union eight children were born.  They lived on the family farm for several years and decided to move into Rock Lake in 1972.  Harry purchased the Standard Oil Station in Rock Lake and 10 years later purchased the town tavern, which he operated as Harry’s Bar.  Years later, both were sold, and they gained employment with the United States Postal Service taking over a rural mail route serving a portion of Egeland and Cando.  Harry and Joyce operated the mail route together for 25 years.  They relocated to Fargo in the fall of 2005, residing at River Square Apartments.  Due to their failing health, they made another move to Bethany Homes in the summer of 2009.

Harry loved the game of baseball and played catcher with many Canadian and American teams.  He also spent many hours umpiring baseball games, officiating basketball games and coached the game of baseball for many years.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.  Harry was a proud member of the Sarles American Legion, a member of the Rock Lake United Methodist Church, served for many years on the Rock Lake School Board and served as mayor of Rock Lake for several years.  Harry is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joyce, sons: Robert “Bob” (Joyce) of Aberdeen, SD, Jack (Lorrie) and  Kim (Monica), both of West Fargo, ND; daughters: Vicki (Paul) Voglewede of Double Oak, TX, Patti Snavely of Egeland, ND, Kandy (Brad) Held of Cando, Tami James of West Fargo and Gina (Randy) Scheidecker of Glyndon, MN.  Other survivors include 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, a dear grandson, Shane Oakland and son-in-law: Jamie Snavely.
