Harley A. Volden, 87, Cando, ND, died peacefully, Thursday, Nov 19, 2009, at his residence surrounded by family.
Harley Adrian Volden was born July 29, 1922 to Carl and Alfreda Volden on the family farm in Ramsey County, west of Devils Lake. He grew up on the farm and graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1941. Harley enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, serving in WWII, mostly in the European Theatre, until his discharge in 1945. He was united in marriage to Delores Lunde on July 28, 1946 at St Olaf Church in Devils Lake, ND.
Harley was employed by Baker Electric Cooperative on June 8, 1948 at Cando North Dakota. He transferred from Cando to Rolla in 1951 where he worked as a lineman for four years before being transferred to Maddock ND, serving in the same capacity there until 1961. He then transferred back to Cando where he was foreman of the Cando Maintenance crew until 1964 when he was brought into the office as dispatcher, staking engineer, and safety director, positions he held until his retirement in 1984.
Harley was a lifetime member and very active in the American Legion. He served as commander at posts in Maddock and Cando and was 3rd District Commander in 1976-77. He also was District Oratorical Chairman in 1978 and 1979 and was Finance Officer in Cando for over 20 years. Harley loved to garden and was a member of the Green Thumb Garden Club in Cando. He also enjoyed playing cribbage, pinochle and boggle.
Harley is survived by his wife, Delores, of Cando; children: Marilyn Matthews, Milford, CA; Warren (RuthEtta) Volden, Grand Forks, ND; Lavonne (Ralph) Matthews, Cando, ND; Cheryl (Bill) Widman, Reynolds, ND; Connie (Chris) Smith, Cranberry Portage, MB; Catherine (Monty) Miller; Sandra (Brian) Volden; and Jerry Volden, all of Cando; 20 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters; Audrey Erickson, Vancouver, WA; and Carol Solseth, Portland, OR. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Florence and sisters, Evelyn Watson, Sylvia Hayes, and Melvia Parman and grandson, Troy Tofsrud.
Funeral Service: Wednesday, November 25, 2009, 10:30 AM at Cando Lutheran Church.
Visitation: Tuesday, November 24, 2009 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando and one hour before the funeral service Wednesday.
Prayer Service: Tuesday, November 24, 2009, 7:00 PM at Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando.
Interment: Norway Lutheran Cemetery, rural Penn, ND
