Shane Oakland

Shane Oakland, 26, of Rock Lake, ND passed away Monday January 19, 2009 surrounded by his loving family in the Palliative Care Unit of MeritCare Hospital of Fargo, ND.

Shane was born May 8, 1982 at Grand Forks, ND to Steven and Kandy (Bucholz) Oakland.  He was raised on the family farm outside of Rock Lake.  During his younger years he participated in sports, became an avid hunter and soon developed a passionate love for golf.  Shane’s great aspiration for farming began at a very young age.

Shane graduated from Rock Lake High School in the class of 2000.  After graduation he enrolled in the plumbing program at Northland Community & Technical College in East Grand Forks, MN.  He then enrolled in the Farm & Business Management program at Lake Region Community College of Devils Lake, ND.  Shane began farming full time in 2001 with his greatest mentor, his father.  He lived and breathed farming.  He loved the land and made sure each row was straight and each seed was planted to the perfect depth.  He also loved to vacation in warmer places, especially Mexico and Las Vegas.  He enjoyed the warmth and bright lights of Las Vegas and even the occasional poker game.

Shane was diagnosed with cancer on January 15, 2008 and though it has been a long road, he has fought a brave and courageous battle filled with strength and determination.  He had many friends who were a wonderful source of strength to him during his illness with endless phone calls, visits and CaringBridge posts.  While he spent much time in and out of hospitals with many health concerns, he remained strong and lived life to the fullest.

Shane is survived by his loving family: his father Steven Oakland of Rock Lake, ND; his mother Kandy Oakland-Held of Cando, ND; his sister Kinsey Oakland of Fargo, ND, paternal grandmother Doris (Leonard) Lien of Devils Lake, ND, maternal grandparents Harry and Joyce Bucholz of Fargo, ND, step-father Brad Held and step brother and sister Ryan and Brittney Held all of Cando, ND, special friend Ashley Johnston and her son Cassidy Johnston of Rock Lake, ND,  many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Gunder Oakland and an uncle James Snavely.

Visitation will begin at 2pm Friday January 23, 2009 with a 7pm Prayer Service at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home of Cando, ND.

Services will be held on Saturday January 24, 2009 at 2:00pm at the All Nations Lutheran Church of Rock Lake, ND.

Interment will be at All Nations Cemetery, Rock Lake, ND in the spring.

Condolences:
Steve & Kandy

I'm so very sorry to hear of your loss of Shane.

I know how much this loss means to you, and how hard you all worked with Shane to try and beat the horrible disease he had.

Please know he is in a place where there is no pain, and he'll be watching over you all from now on.

I know that's not much consolation, and I'm very sorry.

We'll continue praying for you and him.
In love
Fred Covert &
family

My mother was in the Palliative Care Unit and did pass away on 1/15.  I visited with Steve briefly a couple of times and wanted to express our deepest sympathy to you.  I have lost three brothers, 34, 26 & 23, but I cannot imagine the loss of a child.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Ken Kay Krajsa
