Obituary

Arvid D. Oakland, 83, of Bisbee, ND passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the Bisbee Lutheran Church in Bisbee, ND with Pastor Bonnie Weaver officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Arvid was born in Cando, ND on November 16, 1940 to Albert and Myrtle (Johnson) Oakland.  He attended Johnson Grade School and Bisbee School, graduating from Bisbee School in 1959.  He attended Wahpeton State School of Science.  Arvid returned to Bisbee and started farming.  He married Barbara Bursinger on June 16, 1962.  He was a member of the Bisbee Lutheran Church.  He enjoyed his Bible study group.

Arvid held several jobs, including working as a mechanic, working for Farmers Union Oil, being a custodian for the school, and trucking for 14 years.  He continued farming until the fall of 2022.

Over the years Arvid enjoyed various hobbies and activities, including charcoal art, curling, golf, and fishing.  He enjoyed playing cards with his family and used innovative ways to bend the rules to his benefit.  As he got older, he enjoyed tinkering around on the farm.  He found inventive (and sometimes questionable) ways to fix whatever needed fixing.  Arvid was a loving father and grandfather, always ready to crack a joke or bust a move with them.  Arvid had steadfast loyalty to his wife, Barb, along with Ford pickups and International farm equipment.

Arvid is survived by his children, Kayleen (Kevin) of Bisbee, ND, Dave (Jean) Oakland of Millis, MA, and Daniel (Jennifer) Oakland of Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren, Yeisa (Bjorn), Austin (Sam), Nikki (Abe), Matthew, Kaylee (Ron), Rebecca (Chuckie), Madison (Anthony), Adam, and Kjirsten; great-grandchildren, Leif, Kai, Wilder, and baby Chuckie due in April; brothers, James (Florence) Oakland and Eldred (Carol) Oakland; brothers-in-law, Rod (Joyce) Bursinger and Earl Loken; sister-in-law, Lynette (Tony) Galow and Carol Bursinger; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Arvid was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Bursinger) Oakland; his sister, Vivian Loken; his sister-in-law, Carol Berg; and his brother-in-law, Charlie Bursinger.
