Bartley was born August 11, 1934 to Fred and Mabel Mae (Kuhl) Held on a farm in Bisbee, ND, where he was raised and attended school. He married Ruth Ann Peterson on June 9, 1963 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Rolla, ND.
Bartley loved farming and worked on the family farm, and was one of the first in the area to use no till. He moved to California and drove ambulance in Modesto, California for a time and then moved to Walla Walla, Washington and worked on a large farm there. He then moved back to North Dakota and worked at Farmers Union Oil Company at Agate in the 1960's. After his marriage he lived in Rolla for 9 months and then moved to the Fred Held Jr. farm in Sorenson Township, Towner County and has lived there for 51 years.
He was a lifelong member of All Nations Lutheran Church and was baptized and confirmed there. His faith was very important to him. He was an elder in the church and served as President and Secretary of the congregation, as an Usher, was on the Cemetery Board and on other church boards. He served on Farmers Union Oil Company board in Rock Lake, was the President of the North Central Grain board when the terminal was built in Bisbee, served many years on the Sorenson Township Board and was a member of the NFO.
He had a healthy, hardy, exuberant, robust laugh. He loved to fix and repair anything outdoors. He liked boating, pontooning, snowmobiling especially pulling kids on toboggan, camping, enjoying family time, loved watching his kids, grandkids and any other friends and relatives play on the water or in the snow. His children and grandchildren were so much a part of his life. He loved visiting with friends and neighbors, and loved little kids and they loved him.
Bart and Ruth Ann (Rusty) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013.
