Betty Florence Hartl was born in Cando, ND on September 6, 1930 to Charles and Fay (Reid) Dix. Betty and Carl were united in marriage on October 1, 1948 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando, ND. Carl and Betty made their home in Maza Township and farmed for forty years. Betty was blessed with the gift of hospitality. She always kept the coffee on and made visitors feel welcome at the farm. She often spent time ensuring others were taken care of before her.

She had many friends and Carl would affectionately call her "Gabby" as she could often be found talking to friends on the phone and keeping up with the latest.

Betty took pride in keeping a manicured lawn and a clean home. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and they were always welcome on the farm. They have been blessed with many summer memories. Betty was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was very active in Christian Mothers, Sacred Heart Altar Society and was a Minister of the Eucharist at Sacred Heart.

Betty will be fondly missed by her sons: Ron (Sheila) Hartl of Dickinson, ND, and Chuck (Karen) Hartl of Cando, ND; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; twelve step-great-grandchildren; brother Charlie (Edie) Dix, Cando, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl, who passed away April 26, 2012; her parents, Charles and Fay Dix and brothers: Arthur Dix and Harry Dix.

Condolences:

To the Hartl family I wish to express for our family our sincere sympathies in the passing of Betty. Betty and Carl were always good neighbors to my parents Dick and Nellie Gibbens. A significant reason why I have fond memories of growing up on a farm in Maza Township is the fact we had such good neighbors, who always cared for and watched out for each other. Betty was always friendly and considerate, and I seem to remember she was a very good cook! Again, our sympathy. Brad Gibbens
