Beverly was born on July 4, 1928 to Elmer and Zela Smeltzer in Cando, ND. Her early years were spent with her four siblings helping on the family farm west of Cando. She was active in 4-H and the Zion Church of the Brethren. Beverly attended Prairie Rose school, graduated from Cando High School, and then attended McPherson College in McPherson, KS. On October 20, 1947, she married the love of her life, Delbert Lewallen, at the Church of the Brethren in Zion, ND.

Beverly and Delbert raised five children on their family farm in the Zion community. She served her church faithfully as organist, Sunday School teacher, president of the Ladies Aid, and in various ways throughout her life whenever a need arose. Her community involvement included local clubs such as Towner County Rest Home Auxiliary, a weekly craft club, the cancer board, social services for Towner County, and as PTA President. Her heart and home were always open to friends and family and she was a strength to many during times of sorrow and sickness. Beverly's faith in God was lived out through her daily life which was filled to overflowing.
