Carmen Francis Hartl, 90, Cando, ND passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the Towner County Living Center in Cando. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cando, with Fr. Joseph D'Aco, celebrant. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Cando. Visitation will be at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Thursday will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Casket bearers will be Todd Nilsen, Dale Fiedler, Glenn Johnson, Michael Bjornstad, Michael (Mic) Bjornstad and Devin Heisler. Music will be from Marguerite Freund, Tom Freund and Catherine Anfinson.

Carmen was born May 30, 1923 at a home near Cando, ND, the daughter of Ludwig and Christina (Schultz) Wagner. She grew up on her parent's farm near Starkweather and attended both grade school and high school in the area. She was united in marriage to Mike Hartl Jr. on October 16, 1942. Mike and Carmen moved to a farm near Cando after marriage. They raised a family and worked on their farm until Mike was forced to retire, for health reasons, in 1989. Mike used his carpentry skills to build a new home in Cando where they both lived. Mike passed away in 2002. Carmen remained in their home until June of 2009, when she moved to the Towner County Living Center. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and will always be remembered as a great cook, for her love of gardening, crafts and dedication to her family.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Allen) Traynor of Montrose, CO; Dana Johnson and Michelene (Rollie) Bjornstad of Cando, ND; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and a sister Lydia Eggl of Cando, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mike Jr., daughter, Debra; brothers, George and Louie; sister Elsie.

Hi  I am a CNA at the living center in Cando. Your mom was a good spirited woman. I enjoyed spending time with her and the laughter we shared. My daughter and I (Shelby-CNA) enjoyed your mothers smile and comments. I took care of her the night before she passed and noticed she had some restlessness about her. Carmen kept wanting to go home. I asked her if she needed some peace and would like me to say a prayer....her response was 'yes'. I knelt down beside her while she held my hand...as I said the 'Our father'. ...I kissed her on her forehead and told her .. that she would have peace and be home soon.... she thanked me and went to sleep.
