Obituary

Clifford "Hanz" Holien Jr., 83, Cando, ND passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at the Veteran's Hospital in Fargo. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cando, with Fr. Joseph D'Aco, celebrant. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Cando. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Casket bearers will be Rick Holien, Duane Holien, Donavan Holien, Shawn Iverson, Dan Holien and Greg Iverson. Music will be from Gladys Fluge and the Sacred Heart Choir. Military Honors will be provided by the Hal Parker Post #79 Cando American Legion and North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.

Clifford was born October 20, 1929 in Cando, ND, the son of Clifford and Vera (Smith) Holien. He attended school in Cando and worked for his father. He served in the United States Army in the Korean Conflict and also in Europe. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars and also the National Defense Service Medal. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Cando and worked for Holien Contractors, Holien Decorating and Sig Bjornstad. He also did painting and was the custodian at the Cando Memorial Building and Army Complex for twenty-five years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion and enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing.

He is survived by his sister, Dovie Iverson of Valley City, ND and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Norman, Harold, Bernard and Bill; sisters Patty Baker and Ramona Welch.

I remember Hanz when I first came to ND. I used to play Bingo on Monday nights. He was always there, and made the transition to life in ND so much easier. RIP Hanz!  Tammy Johnson
