Darrel W. Reed, 74, Cando, ND, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer at his home under the loving care of his family and Mercy Hospice.
Services will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 2 pm at Cando Lutheran Church with Rev. Bonnie Weaver officiating. Visitation will be held at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 from 2 to 7 pm with a family service at 7:30 pm. Visitation onThursday will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando, ND. Serving as casket bearers for Darrel will be David K. Reed, Kevin Reed, Brandon Martz, Brady Martz, Brett Martz and Clinton Martz. Honorary bearers will be past and present Baker Electric and Northern Plains Electric Cooperative Employees, and Sons of Norway Prairie Fjord Lodge #4-649 Members of Cando, ND. Music will be from Carol Hunt and Dick and Lynette Lybeck.
Darrel W. Reed was born October 9, 1937 in Cando, ND, the son of Marsden and Inez (Nelson) Reed. He attended schools at Kalispell, MT and Cando, ND. He helped his uncle, Efner Nelson, build houses in North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Darrel started working for Baker Electric in Cando, ND, on April 11, 1958 and was united in marriage to Janice Berg on June 7, 1958, at Cando, ND. The couple moved to Rugby, ND in 1958 where they lived for six years. The couple and their three children moved back to Cando, and Darrel continued to work for Baker Electric as a lineman and a foreman for the underground crew until his retirement in 1995.
Darrel is survived by his wife: Janice of Cando, ND; daughter: Daline (Greg Mackley) of Cando, ND; sons: Dale (Christine) of Grand Forks, ND, David (Barb) of Devils Lake, ND; brother: Duane (Janet) Reed of Cando, ND; sister: Diane (Ken) Teubner of Cando, ND; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death were his parents, Marsden and Inez Reed and father and mother-in-law, Martin and Viola Berg.
Darrel and Janice enjoyed more than thirty years attending the Norsk Hostfest in their camper at Minot, ND and Trollfjorden Norwegian Camp at Lake Metigoshe, ND with their grandchildren Kevin, Crystal, Sierra and Brett. Darrel also enjoyed woodworking, camping with his family, and listening to country music. He always took pride in everything he did whether it was at home or at work. He was a member of the Cando Lutheran Church, served on the Cando Lutheran Church Council and was a charter member of the Sons of Norway Prairie Fjord Lodge #4-649 of Cando, ND.
