Dennis L. Westby, 54, Cando, ND passed away on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at his home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 9, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at Lakeview Lutheran Church in Egeland, ND with Rev. Rob Buechler officiating. Visitation will be held at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a family service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Thursday will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Union Cemetery, Egeland, ND. Serving as Casket Bearers for Dennis will be James Thomas, Russell Carter, Pete Theissen, Mike Carter, Dave Dennis, and Bob Lisante. Military honors will be provided by the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.

Dennis Lee Westby was born on September 12, 1957, in Cando, ND, the son of Ben and Jeannine (Gable) Westby. He grew up in Egeland and was baptized and confirmed at Lakeview Lutheran Church. He graduated from Egeland High School and also graduated with honors from the Officer Candidate School while serving in the North Dakota National Guard. He returned to Egeland and farmed. Dennis served on the Lakeview Lutheran Church Board. He was united in marriage to Kristie Vogel on October 23, 1998 in Cando, ND. He took over ownership of Westby Trucking, Cando, ND, in 1995, after his father's passing, which he continued to own and operate until the time of his death. Dennis was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards and poker with friends.

Dennis is survived by his mother:  Jeannine Westby of Cando, ND; brother: Kelly (Renae) Westby of Cando, ND; nephew: Jason (Barbie) Westby of Fargo, ND; niece: Kari (Dan) Treleaven of Williston, ND; great-nephew: Espen Ben Westby; and great-nieces: Gianna Lorraine Westby and Elliana Grace Treleaven.

He was preceded in death by his father Ben Westby.

I was shocked to read that Dennis had passed away. I was classmate of Dennis at the North Dakota Military Acadamy Officer Candidate School and we graduated together from there. I had lost track of Dennis through the years, but I often thought of him and had hoped to make contact with him someday. It just goes to show that we should not put these things off. My deepest condolences to his family.

Dennis  was  a  true  friend  of  Bill  and  myself.  When  ever  we  would  come  home  to  Cando  and  visit  we  would  always  try  and  find  him  for  a  good  visit.  He  will  be  truley  missed  in  Cando  but  has  gone  to  heavan  to  help  his  dad  run  the  trucking  company  with  his  dad  and  God.

I was saddened to hear of Dennis' passing.  I had not seen him for many years but my husband and I spent many hours with him at my mother's home in Cando playing cards, visiting and just having a wonderful time together.  I always had the highest regard for him and I know that he will be missed by everyone who really knew him.
