Dorothy C. (Nicklay) Marr, 98, of Cando, ND peacefully passed away Thursday, June 7, 2018 at the Towner County Living Center in Cando, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando, ND with Fr. Daniel Musgrave celebrating mass. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 12, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM with a 6:30 PM Rosary and 7:00 PM Vigil Service at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Cando. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to: the American Cancer Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, Towner County Living Center or to the Sacred Heart Church for Masses to be offered in her behalf.

Dorothy was born January 14, 1920 to John and Josephine (Bernatsky) Nicklay. She was raised the youngest of five children in Crookston, MN. Dorothy graduated from Mount Saint Benedict Academy where she began her lifelong enjoyment of music. She was active in orchestra where she played violin and played the pipe organ and piano at the Cathedral for Mass and special occasions. After graduating, she attended Sherwood Music School in Chicago where she received certification as a qualified piano instructor. In 1941 she arrived in Cando and began a teaching career which included instructing over 200 piano students, some of which went on to become professional musicians.

At that time she also began her long-time association with the Towner County Record Herald owned and operated by Pete, Blanche, Bob and Kathie Denison. She began as a news correspondent, and in the following years she worked in every aspect of newspaper operation, from circulation, job work to receptionist and "girl Friday". She operated the linotype, job printer, justowriter and compugraphic, large printing press, insert machine and then the computer when the switch to "off set" printing began. She retired from the Record Herald after 60 years but came out of retirement to again take the position as news correspondent writing local news in the "Locals" column for many more years.

In 1945, Dorothy married local auctioneer, John Marr, from Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She assisted him as clerk in his career. She took pride in knowing, by sight, hundreds of individuals from the tri-county area. This was a skill that was needed to complete the required bookwork for many home and farm auctions.

Dorothy was active at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for over 60 years. She was a member of Christian Mothers, played the organ for Sunday Mass, weddings, funerals and accompanied the Junior Choir. Dorothy also loved to bowl and did so at the ABL Lanes on the Coffee Cup League and was proud to be a member of the "over 200" club. She also attended out of state tournaments. Dorothy enjoyed community involvement in the American Legion Auxiliary for over 65 years. She was a member of Cando Homemakers, Senior Citizens, Music Club and the Hospital and Living Center Auxiliaries. She loved to call Bingo for the Auxiliary and at the Prairie View Estates where she resided for 7 years. In 2013 she became a resident of the Towner County Living Center where she played the piano for residents, took part in Bingo and many other activities.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Jean Marr Wolf, son-in-law Franklin of Bismarck; Franklins son, Murray and wife Betsy and their children Andy, Matthias and Sophia; granddaughter, Lindsey; grand son-in-law Joe Mechtenberg of Minneapolis; godchild and niece, Louise L'Allier (Ralph) of Hugo, MN; over 50 nieces, nephews including grand, great grand nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, John; brother, Arthur Nicklay; sisters, Helen Glawe, Sr. Louise Nicklay, Alice Miller; step son, Robert L. (Bob) Marr.
