Dorothy E. Oakland was born July 15, 1934 to Edward and Ragna (Larson) Oakland at Bisbee, ND. Dorothy grew up in Sorenson Township and attended Johnson Country School for grades one to four, then went to Bisbee School for the remaining grades, graduating from high school in 1952. After graduation, she worked in Rugby at The Merchants Bank and for Baker Electric Cooperative in Cando until she got married.
Dorothy married Charles Peters on August 17, 1956 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Bisbee. They started their married life on a farm southwest of Bisbee where they lived during the time their six children were born, and they farmed there for nine years. It was there in 1961 that they started raising turkeys which, when they moved to a farm north of Bisbee in 1965, grew into a successful family operation. Dorothy was a great example of a farm wife and was always there to help with hauling grain during harvest. When her children got older and took over for her, she loved to sit in the pickup in the grain field and watch her family work. She was always there to help, whether moving equipment to a new field or bringing lunch out. She had a big part in helping take care of the turkeys in the early years, and after the turkeys grew into a family operation including the grandchildren, she always had homemade caramel rolls on the kitchen table early in the morning after a new shipment of poults had been unloaded and were safely settled in the barn. When the grown turkeys were shipped out, she always had a good hot meal ready when the family and helpers were finished loading. She was a true farm wife and mother. She was so proud of her children and how well they worked together.
Dorothy loved to mow lawn and took pride in the beautiful flowers outside around her house but what Dorothy really had pride in was her grandchildren and her relationship with them. They loved her and she was always there for them. There were always fresh chocolate chip cookies, either made that day or the day before (at least a million!). Three favorites that her family loved were her caramel bars, her homemade sauerkraut, and her own special topping of oil and onions over potatoes.
Dorothy and Charles moved to Cando in August 2022. In January 2026, due to health issues, Dorothy entered the Towner County Living Center at Cando where she received excellent and loving care. After Charles and Dorothy celebrated 70 years of marriage on August 17th, two weeks later on September 1, 2026, Dorothy passed away peacefully at Towner County Living Center with her family at her side.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Charles and six children, Steven (Mary Ellen), William (Julie), Carl (Kathy), Paula (Gregg) Wieser, Thomas (Amy), John (Christy); fourteen grandchildren – Vanessa, Rebecca, Erica, Jason, Cody, Amanda, Magdalena, Matthew, Andrew, Madison, McKenzie, Sammy Jo, Morgan, and Lexie; nineteen great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law Sandy Oakland, Louisa Newberry, and Sr. Gemma Peters.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Raymond, and Howard Oakland, and an infant sister, Edna Mae Oakland; her parents-in-law, Jacob and Magdalena Peters; five sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law.
