Obituary

Edward W. Koshney, 91, of Cando, ND passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at Towner County Living Center in Cando, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando, ND at 11:00 am with Fr. Daniel Musgrave officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. with a 5:30 rosary and 6 p.m. vigil service on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home in Cando. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Cando. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Music will be provided by Gladys Fluge, Tom Freund and the Sacred Heart Choir. Military Honors will be provided by the Hal Parker Post #79 Cando American Legion and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Casket bearers will be Jack Schwanke, Spencer Turck, Cameron Koshney, Steven Martinson, Dominic Kringlen, Darren Kringlen, and Devin Koshney. Clyde Kringlen will be the reader and gift bearers will be his granddaughters.

Edward W. Koshney was born on December 23, 1924 in Beach, ND to Edward and Mabel (McDanold) Koshney. Edward graduated from Beach High School in 1942 and entered the US Army at age 18, where he served in WWII as a radio telegraph operator with Headquarters Company, 9th Tank Battalion, 20th Armored Division in Europe. After he was discharged from the Army he attended school at NDSSS in Wahpeton, ND. Edward married Emma Allery on August 16, 1950 in Cando at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. To this union, ten children were born. He worked for Ulteig Engineering in Fargo, ND until his job took him to Cando, where he was eventually hired at Baker Electric working for them as an electrical engineer until his retirement in 1987. He continued living in Cando until his death.

Edward always carried his trumpet with him. He played in numerous bands beginning in high school with The Five Gentlemen of Jive, later the Moonlighters, the Aristocats, and the Medicare Hawks, just to name a few. He was a charter member and played for 50 years with the Devils Lake Elks Band. He was also a proud member of the ND State American Legion Band for over 50 years. Edward played taps on Memorial Day in Cando until 2014 and at many funerals in the area.

Edward loved to garden, was active in his church, was a CCD Leader, lector, Eucharistic Minister at church and President of the Cando School Board.

Edward is survived by his wife of 65 years Emma Koshney and children; Linda Martinson and husband Gary, Devils Lake, granddaughters Stephanie Martinson, Southern Pines, North Carolina, Suzanne Rheault and husband Matthew, Charlotte, NC, grandson Steven Martinson, Devils Lake. Great grandchildren Henry, Carson, and Bentley Rheault; Laurie Lunn and Joe Pena, Mandan; Beverly Koshney, Devils Lake; Paulette Kringlen and husband Clyde, McIntosh, MN, grandchildren Stacy Kringlen Smith and husband Andy, Plymouth, MN, Darren Kringlen and wife Holly, Red Lake Falls, MN, Dominic Kringlen and wife Kayla, Grand Forks, ND. Great grandchildren McKenzie and Natalie Smith, Liam, Eli, and Kora Kringlen; Mike Koshney and wife Brenda, grandchildren Cameron and Ellen, Fargo; David Koshney, Walhalla, grandchildren Rachel and Devin, Coeur d'Alene, ID; Albert Koshney and wife Laura, grandchildren Lydia, Grace, and Evelyn, Mayville; Kathryn Schwanke and husband Doyle, Maddock, grandchildren Jessie, Fargo, Sara and Jack, Maddock; Mary Turck and husband Bradley, Devils Lake, grandchildren Shelby, Grand Forks, and Spencer, Devils Lake; Daughter-in-law Lorraine Hanna and husband Dave of Fargo, and daughter Lydia, of Fargo.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents; son Gary and brother Neale.
