Elsie Louise Weiker, 98, of Cando, ND, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2023, at the Towner County Living Center of Cando.  She was surrounded with love by God and her family. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cando at 11:00 a.m. with Father Daniel Musgrave celebrating the Mass.  Visitation will be Monday, May 29, 2023 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, ND followed by a Rosary and Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.  Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Cando. Visitation will also continue on Tuesday for one hour prior to the services in the church. The family would like to thank those who took such loving care of her during her stay at the TCLC.

Elsie Weiker was born May 17,1924 to Joseph and Kathie (Moser) Kufner on a farm outside of Cando. When Elsie was 10, the family moved to Maza where she attended Irvin Consolidated Country School. She transferred her senior year to Cando High School where she graduated in 1942. After high school, Elsie attended Interstate Business College in Fargo before returning to Cando where she started a job at Canfield's Store. It was during this time she was introduced, by her future mother-in-law (Margaret Weiker), to Sterling Weiker. Elsie married Sterling on November 14,1945 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando and spent the next 68 years together hand in hand.

From this union, they became the parents of four children; Margaret Kay (Tim) Hoff, Donald Weiker, Marla (Wynn) Allen and Sheila (Jerry) Laturnus. From these unions came 10 grandchildren, Jeana (Mitch) Jorde, Donald (Jennifer) Weiker, Melissa (Kerry) Campbell, Katy Hoff, Paul (Alicia) Laturnus, Leanne Hoff, Tara (Matt) Pistilli, Sara (Steve) Buresh, Jill (Cole) Boehmer and Emily (Zach) Siewert. Elsie was a great grandma to 15 great-grandchildren who she loved to spoil with her homemade sweet treats and hugs.  Elsie was also blessed with four nephews, Orval (Kay) Hanson, William (Marylon) Hanson, Robert (JoLea) Metz and Kenneth (Barbara) Metz. Elsie enjoyed every minute she was able to spend with her loved ones.  As she was known to say often, "God has been so good to me and I'm so glad I am able to enjoy my family."

Elsie had many jobs in her life from making sandwiches to feed the harvest crew, working for Jan and Fred Eggl at their motel, the hospital and Bob's Fairway, but the job she loved the most was raising her four children, which she did exceptionally well. She was known for her love of card games, crocheting potholders and towels and of course her baking skills, mydoshin, caramel rolls and especially her bread. She always made sure it was coming out of the oven when her children arrived home from school or making sure her grandchildren went home with a loaf every time they came to visit along with her famous strawberry-rhubarb jam. Elsie was known for her kind and caring demeanor and always knowing how to put a smile on your face.

Elsie enjoyed being active in the community. She was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary and she took part in planting and caring for the trees to help beautify the cemetery. Elsie and Sterling shared a love for traveling which included trips to their cabin at Pelican Lake with family and friends every summer for many years, 22 years of wintering in Arizona and many wonderful trips around the US and Canada.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Sterling Weiker, her parents, Joseph and Kathie Kufner, her brothers Joseph Kufner, Jr. and Albert Kufner, her sisters, Mary Hanson and Katherine Kufner, her son-in-law Tim Hoff and nephew, Robert Metz.
