George T. Freund, 86, of Cando, ND passed away Sunday, October 16, 2016 at his home surrounded by family. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, October 21, 2016 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando, ND at 10:30 am with Fr. Daniel Musgrave officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary and 7:30 p.m. vigil service on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Cando after the funeral reception. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Music will be provided by Wayne Freund, Marguerite Freund, Tom Freund and Gladys Fluge. Military Honors will be provided by the Hal Parker Post #79 Cando American Legion and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team. Casket bearers will be his sons Dennis Freund, David Freund, Robert Freund, Raymond Freund, Brent Freund and Gary Freund. Honorary bearers will be his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Michael Rinas will be the reader and gift bearers will be his grandchildren. Altar servers will be Joseph and Cecelia Freund.
George Theodore, son of George J. and Anna (Rasmussen) Freund was born on January 28, 1930 on the farm North of Cando where he grew up.
First 7 grades he attended Egeland West School, then Cando High School and graduating in 1947. He joined the National Guard in 1947, left for Camp Rucker Alabama January 1951, then Korea November 1951.
George returned home December 1952 and retired from the National Guard in February 1971 as Captain.
George married the love of his life Gladys Elverud on July 8, 1954 in Cando, ND. Together they raised 11 children on the family farm in Cando ND.
George was very active in ND American Legion, being Post Adjutant for 50 years. He served in offices as 3rd District Commander in 1991 and Central Region Vice Commander in 1992. George was Towner County Weed and Pest Control Officer and served on the Township Board. As a member of Knights of Columbus he held various offices. George was secretary for many years in the Cando Bowling Leagues. He was inducted in to the ND Bowling Hall of Fame. He enjoyed working with rural farmers for the Agricultural Statistics Service for 20 years.
His hobbies and interests were bowling, hunting and trapping, gardening, watching sports on TV and spending time with grandkids and great grandkids.
George proudly served his country and did his best to provide for his family.
George is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Gladys Freund of Cando ND; children, Dennis Freund, Killdeer ND, Janis Sorge, Coeur d'Alene ID, David Freund, Cando ND, Robert (Vicky) Freund, Bonners Ferry ID, Joann (Michael) Rinas, Cando ND, Raymond Freund, Cando ND, Beverly (Rick) Robinson, Leeds ND, Brent Freund, Cando ND, Barbara (Bill) Fuller, Pecos, NM, Gary Freund, Cando ND, Gail (Justin) Hill, Bismarck ND; siblings, Wayne (Marguerite) Freund, Cando ND, Betty (Dale) Farbo, Cando ND, Sister Dominica Freund, St. Joseph MN; 20 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents, John (Jack) Freund, brother, and Sister Rose Marie Freund, sister.
