Gert L. Baerwald, 88, of Rugby, ND passed away on Monday, December 5, 2011 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, ND. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 1:30 PM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rugby, ND.

Gert L. Baerwald was born on May 5, 1923 in Egeland, ND, the son of Ludwig and Olga (Depner) Baerwald.  He worked as a cheese maker in Northern Minnesota and also worked in a lumber camp where he filled teeth in the woods. He was involved in the Civilian Conservation Corps at the International Peace Garden where he cut and laid rock. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Galow on July 8, 1944 in Egeland, ND. The couple farmed on the Carl Rinas Farm near Egeland. They moved to Worland, WY for one winter where Gert worked laying curb and gutter. They returned to Bisbee, ND, and he farmed and did veterinary work for 23 years. In 1977 he became the Chief of Police for the city of Rolette, ND. He retired in 1980. The couple continued to live in Rolette until 1999 when they moved to Rugby. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and watching television.

Gert is survived by his wife: Lorraine Baerwald of Rugby, ND; children: Gary Baerwald of San Antonio, TX, Deborah (Wally) Rindy of Mesa, AZ, Neiland (Janell) Baerwald of Sevierville, TN, Vanessa (Lowell) Boe of Woodbine, IA;  9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 1 great- great- grandchild; brother: Hugo Baerwald of Egeland, ND; and sisters: Sylvia Haus of  Cando, ND and Ella Campbell of Cando, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Waldemer Baerwald; sister: Anita Cantrell; grandson: Dereck Baerwald and daughter-in-law: Diane Baerwald.
