Greg Gibbens, 63, of Juneau, Alaska, formerly of Cando, ND passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012 in Juneau.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at United Methodist Church, Cando, ND. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Cando, ND in the spring.

Greg was born in Devils Lake, ND, on May 25, 1948, the son of Richard and Nellie (Robertson) Gibbens. He grew up in Cando, ND and graduated from Cando High School in 1966. He received his Masters Degree in Counseling from University of North Dakota in Grand, Forks, ND and a Masters Degree in Social Work from Portland State College in Portland, OR. After college he worked at Lake Region Junior College in Devils Lake, ND. Greg moved to Juneau, Alaska in 1980 and worked as a therapist/counselor for the City of Juneau. He married Joanne Bas on August 20, 1993 in Juneau where the couple made their home. He continued to work for the city until he eventually established his own private practice and continued until his retirement. Greg will always be remembered for his kind, gentle spirit and concern for the welfare of others.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife: Joanne of Juneau, AK and brothers: Brad Gibbens of Grand Forks, ND and Richard Gibbens of Cando, ND.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the I.O.O.F. Cemetery Fund or the Cando Community Library.

I will remember cousin Gregs laugh and smile for as long as I live. It was fun being a cowboy with him when we were 8 or 9. When he called a few years ago his voice was older but his little boy laugh was still in him. His life touched a lot of people and he lives on in our hearts.

Heartfelt love and sympathy from our California family to Joann,Dick,Brad. I will remember Gregg always as my fun loving and kind North Dakota cousin with a smile readily available for everyone. I fondly remember visits with my father, Clarence Gibbens, as we would trek to the Dakotas to see his brothers Willard and Dick and their families. The families were close even though distance separated Ruth Gibbens Dudley in Colorado and the North Dakota family. As we were in the Los Angeles area these visits were most cherished. Greg always made an effort to keep me company and provide lots of mischievious adventures which I will always cherish. He will remain close in our hearts and foremost in our thoughts and prayers. I am certain he is in a better place now and is peaceful and happy enjoying his family in heaven!

Greg was a very nice man I worked for his Dad and he gave me Greg 57 ford if I could make it run ,I did and it ended up being my first car I was 13 yrs. old at the time,and Greg and I were friends ever after.God bless Him and His Family.

I wish to express my sincere sympathy to the Gibbons family, especially Joanne and his 2 brothers.  Greg was a wonderful person and a special school friend (as we were very often seated beside eash other in class due to our last names).  I know that his career in life, as a social worker, was really him trying to help others all the time.  I lost my husband 8 years ago, after a long illness, so I do understand your loss and what you are feeling Joanne, but with all of Gods help you will get through this, in time, and move on...you will not ever forget, but each day, after awhile, will get a little easier.

Laona and I would like to send our sincere condolences to your family. We could not attend the funeral as we were in Arizona at the time. I would meet up with Greg and Joanne in Juneau when I was flying some contracts in Alaska. It was nice to see someone from home while being that far away from home.
