Harvey D. Johnston, 83, Cando, ND, passed away Thursday, October 31, 2013, at the Towner County Living Center in Cando.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Cando Lutheran Church in Cando with Rev. Bonnie Weaver, officiating. Interment will be at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando, ND. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Harvey was born November 4, 1929 in Rolla, ND to Sayles P. and Ethel (Patterson) Johnston. He married Marjorie Baeverstad on July 22, 1951 at Cando Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in the Cando area until they retired.

Harvey is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Marjorie; son Michael (Joleen) Johnston of Cando, ND; daughters: Lisa (Rick) Soggie of Fargo, ND, Julie (Randy) Lemm of Hillsboro, ND, Nancy Jo (Larry) Kropp of Jamestown, ND; grandchildren: Jill Johnston of Cando, Calli Elli and Anna Lemm of Hillsboro, Andrew Nugent of Madison, SD; sisters Martha Manikowske and Mary Moomjiam and brothers Sayles W. and George (Betty) Johnston.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Irene Ulvick and Ilene Johnston.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Cando Lutheran Church.

I have been sharing "Harvey stories" with my husband Keith and talking via email with my two sons John and Rob about our visits to Cando. Both remember visiting the farm and riding along with Harvey to check the cows, run to Devils Lake for combine parts or Taco Pizza, and the trips to Dairy Queen after dinner for Blizzards. And what about those marathon rummy games! I remember following Harvey around as a girl myself and the races we would have from the barn back to the house. While Harvey is looking down and giving instructions about what is needed for farming, we can be rest assured that God is Blessed with a good man at his side. Marjorie and family we were saddened to hear of Harvey's death. I valued Harvey's involvement in 4-H and his love for livestock, especially the Polled Herefords. As a young man, I learned a lot from him in these areas. I also enjoyed the entire family, growing up with them and also working for them showing cattle for several years. He will be greatly missed.
