Helen "Peggy" Shock Overland, 89, of Cando, ND formerly of Churchs Ferry and Devils Lake, ND passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at the Towner County Living Center in Cando, ND.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Christian Fellowship Church, Cando with the Reverend Les Koenig officiating. Visitation will be held at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando on Sunday, March 6, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Family Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Monday will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place later in the spring in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando. Casket Bearers will be her grandsons: Travis Shock, Jason Lura, Corey Shock, Darin Shock, Michael Shock, Matthew Shock and Kyle Johnson. Honorary Bearers will be all of the kids that Peggy babysat. Music will be provided by Sid Bingaman and Catherine Anfinson.

Peggy (Helen Jane) was born on October 8, 1926 to Norman and Christine (Barenscher) Clark on a farm by Churchs Ferry, North Dakota where she lived her childhood years and graduated from Churchs Ferry Public School in 1944. She was baptized and confirmed in the Churchs Ferry Methodist Church.

After graduating from high school, Peggy worked for other farm families and helped with their children. In 1945 she moved to Cando where she worked for JC Penney's. While living in Cando she met one of the two loves of her life. She married Bobby (Thor) Shock on March 14, 1947 at her grand-parents' home in Churchs Ferry and together they raised four sons, Donald, Gary, Allen and Joel who were her pride and joy. They lived on a farm north of Cando until 1956 when they moved to town, at which time she began a career of babysitting. Between 1958 – 1971 she babysat many children and treated them as her own and loved hearing from them in later years.

In 1971 Bobby and Peggy became consignees of the Mobil Oil Dealership in Cando. In 1972 after celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary, Bobby passed away. Peggy continued with the dealership along with her son Gary, also taking in renters with whom she became very close friends. She later worked for Mel Trudel Oil Company, followed by employment at the Towner County Courthouse in the Treasurer's Office. In 1988 she began care-giving services traveling to other towns, living and caring for them in their homes.

On August 5, 1995 Peggy married the 2nd love of her life, Allan Overland of Churchs Ferry, a former classmate from first grade on. Allan and Peggy made their home on the Overland farm until water forced them to move to Devils Lake. Peggy was involved in church, teaching Sunday School for many years, Brethren Ladies Aide, Homemakers Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of Norway, Churchs Ferry Alumni Association and helping with Odd Fellow activities.

After losing their Devils Lake home in a fire in June 2009, they moved into the Towner County Living Center due to deteriorating health.

Peggy was a great mother and grandmother and we all loved her sense of humor and wit and the silly things she would say. She was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved spending time with them babysitting or going on short road trips creating great memories. She enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, cross-stich, embroidery, sewing each grandchild a baby blanket, doing crossword puzzles, word search, computer games, old TV programs especially Lawrence Welk, eating out with Allan and eating her favorite junk food, especially black jelly beans.

She is survived by her husband, Allan, sons, Donald (Linda) Shock and Gary Shock of Cando, daughter-in-law Cindy Nelms (Joe) of Jamestown, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Preceding Peggy in death was - Husband: Bobby, Sons: Allen and Joel, Daughter-in-law Lynette, Parents: Norman and Christine Clark, Sisters: Betty Newell, Ann Melhus, Norma Sue Denton and brother Wayne Clark.
