Helma Grace Gibbens, 93, of Cando, ND passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the Towner County Living Center in Cando, ND with family by her side. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, February 2, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Cando, ND with Pastor Rick Craig officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Music will be provided by Catherine Anfinson and Gladys Fluge. Burial will take place at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Cando, ND in the spring.
Helma Grace Kinzley was born on April 19, 1924 to Clarence and Mabel (Ortberg) Kinzley in Mohall, ND. She grew up in Mohall where she attended school and graduated in 1942. She attended Minot State University and North Dakota State University where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and graduated in 1946.
Helma moved to Milwaukee, WI in 1947 where she met James Gibbens. On June 19, 1948 they were married in Mohall, ND. They settled on the Gibbens homestead in rural Cando, ND. Helma and James had three children: James Jr., Jack, and Lisa. They farmed for many years and ran Tri-County Supply at Maza, ND.
Helma was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Entre Nous, Cando Arts Council, Cando Golf Club, the United Methodist Church and many other Cando organizations. She enjoyed playing cards, Dancing with the Stars, and took many bus tours and trips around the country. Helma was a devoted grandmother and especially loved following her great-grandchildren's activities.
Helma is survived by her son, James (Linda) Gibbens; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Paul) Hermann, Jamie (Rod) Halverson, Jo (Chad) Staus, Jessica (Jayson) Knutson, Julie (Todd) States, and James (Erin) Gibbens; eleven great-grandchildren, Emily Gibbens, Peyton Halverson, Abigail Hermann, Mya Halverson, Ian Knutson, Kinzley Knutson, Sydney Staus, Hannah Hermann, Jack Jorde, Annabelle Staus, and Jayson Jorde; brother, Richard (Coleen) Kinzley; sister, Ellen Witteman; sisters'-in-law, Helen Gibbens and Kathleen Kolakowski; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; son, Jack; daughter, Lisa; and great-granddaughter, Brynlee.
