Homer Franklin Mitchell's Obituary
Homer Franklin Mitchell, 96, of Grand Forks, ND and formerly of Rock Lake, ND, passed away on March 17, 2012 at Woodside Village in Grand Forks, ND.
Homer was born on September 2, 1915 on a farm east of Rock Lake, the son of Walter S. and Bessie L. (Florey) Mitchell. He graduated from Rock Lake High School in 1932 and attended Business College in Chillicothi, MO. Homer married Gladys Kilen on October 18, 1941 in Stanley, ND. Gladys passed away on March 14, 1973. They had three children: William H. Mitchell, Maureen K. and Pam A..
On December 26, 1974, Homer married Vera Kilen Joyce in Fargo, ND. They lived on the family farm at Rock Lake until 1993 when he and Vera moved to Fargo, ND. They spent their winters in Mesa, AZ. They moved to Grand Forks, ND in February 2006. They resided in Parkwood Place and Valley 4000. Homer's lifetime work was as a farmer, but he also did carpentry work with his two brothers, Elmer and Buck. He was the chairman of the committee that built the Methodist Church in Rock Lake in 1960.
Homer had many interests over the years including sports of all kinds. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, pool and cards. Homer was known for his quick smile, sharp wit and ready laugh.
Homer is survived by his wife, Vera; his son: William (Dorothy) of Hazelton, ID; his daughters: Maureen (Larry) Barker of Grand Forks and Pam (Ed) Kaleva of Ft Morgan, CO; step-son: Steven (LaNae) Joyce of Colony, TX; step-daughter: Tari Joyce of Ft Wayne, IN; grandchildren: Darin (Kathy) Barker of Grand Forks, Stacey (Diana) Mitchell of Meridian, ID, Blake (Martha) Mitchell of Billings, MT, Shani (Darin) Peichel of Sartell, MN, Nicole (Fiancée Paul Green) Kaleva Anderson of Ft. Collins, CO, Amber (Josh) Amerman of Ft. Collins, CO; great-grandchildren: Madeline, Haley and Julia Mitchell, Abby Peichel, Gillian and Maggie Barker, Noah Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Gladys; brothers: Elmer and Ray (Buck) and a sister Doris Eckerdt.
Homer will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Services will be held Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Rock Lake Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be held at Rock Lake Community Cemetery.
Deepest sympathy to Homer's family. Having grown up about 5 miles north, drove by his farm many times. Never knew you, Vera, and your family, but Bill, Maureen and Pam were on the farm when Doug, Dianne and myself were growing up. God's blessings to you at this time.

I recall Homer's avid following of basketball, including TV tournements. I also remember Homer to be the primary 'swather guy' with Elmer and Buck finishing with the combines.

Heartfelt condolences to the family of Homer Mitchell. He was a dear and long-time friend to my Dad, Mel Bulock. I grew up hearing of their exploits! I know my Dad treasured his friendship with both Homer and Elmer and the memories of their fun together.
