Hugo H. Baerwald, 96, of Egeland, ND, passed away Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Towner County Living Center in Cando, ND. Services will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at All Nations Lutheran Church in Rock Lake, ND with Rev. Scott Ramey officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home in Cando, ND and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in Bisbee Lutheran Cemetery, Bisbee, ND in the spring. Casket bearers will be Bruce Rinas, Kevin Rinas, Mark Baerwald, Aldon Anderson, Neil Baerwald and Tony Galow. Music will be provided by Lisa Held.
Hugo H. Baerwald was born on February 10, 1921 to Ludwig and Olga (Depner) Baerwald in Twin Hill Township. Hugo was a baptized, confirmed and member of Trinity Lutheran Church until it closed. He transferred to All Nations Lutheran Church in Rock Lake. He attended school in Egeland, ND. Hugo enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937 and was sent to the Coulee Dam in Washington where he drove truck and cleared brush. He enlisted again in 1941 and was sent to the International Peace Gardens to split rocks and drive truck. Hugo was honorably discharged twice from the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937 and 1941.
On April 14, 1946 Hugo was united in marriage to Iva Galow. The couple farmed at Arndt, ND until they retired in 1983. They continued to live on the farm. Hugo served on the church board, Bisbee School Board and was a Gerrard Township Supervisor. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and giving haircuts to relatives.
Hugo is survived by his daughter, Myrna (Gary) Church of West Fargo, ND; sons Darwin (Nancy) of Cando, ND; Myron of Egeland, ND; grandchildren Tara (Pat) Clancy and their sons Ryan and Connor of Bismarck, ND; Kari (Wes) Erickson and their daughter Anika and son Hayden of Fargo, ND and Audra (Joey) Krysinski of Castle Rock, CO; sister Ella Campbell of Cando, ND and sister-in-law Lorraine Baerwald of Fargo, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Iva, grandson Ryan Church, brothers Wally and Gert; sisters Anita Cantrell and Silvia Haus.
