John R."Jack" Freund, 78, Cando, ND passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cando, with Fr. Joseph D'Aco, celebrant.  Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Cando. Visitation will be at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Wednesday will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Military Honors will be provided by the Hal Parker Post #79 Cando American Legion and North Dakota Military Funeral Honors.

John R. (Jack) Freund was born on the family farm to George J. & Anna (Rasmussen) Freund near Cando, ND on February 6, 1934.   He attended school with his two older brothers at the country school, Egeland West Schoolhouse. In 1942, they then started school at the Cando Public School. Upon graduation, John served in the US Army for 2 yrs. with a rank of private second class.  After returning from the army he then attended St. John's University, MN for a year.

Jack married Joyce Sand on June 7, 1960 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Jack and Joyce raised 5 children (2 boys, 3 girls) on the farm 5 miles north of Cando.  Their children are Patrick Freund of Cando and his children Alliana & Sean, Timothy (Barb) Freund of Brocket and their children Kayla, Tyler, Britney and great grand-daughter Christine, Natalie (Richard) Dickson of Wilton and their children Tori, Travis, Tonya & Tate, Melissa (Brad) Westphal of Williston and their children Jonathon, Anthony & Erica, and Michelle (Matthew) Neumann of Bucyrus, OH and their children Mackenzie, Mitchel, Melisa, & Marcus.

Jack loved playing the organ, having started in the ninth grade until recently retiring in August of 2012. He has played for weddings, funerals, community concerts & many events in Cando and the surrounding cities. Jack taught Sunday school at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  He worked for the FHA for many years and retired. Jack then took a job for Cando Insurance.  He continued insurance work at the First State Bank. His last jobs were the Veteran's Affair Service Officer and Public Administrator.  Jack was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Hal Parker Post # 79 Cando American Legion.

Jack's joys in life were his wife, children, and grandchildren. He had a zest for life and loved the farm. He spent many hours outside taking care of his animals and his many flower gardens. He was a very kindhearted man, who enjoyed helping people. He joked and talked to everyone. Another enjoyment of Jack's was to bowl in leagues with his family and friends. His love for music was shared with all his children and grandchildren by either playing for their solos or just attending the many concerts they performed in. The grandchildren enjoyed having Papa Jack attend their many activities.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert Vernon & his sister Sr. Rose Marie O.S.F. of Hankinson.  He is survived by his wife, children,

grandchildren, great grand-child, his brothers: George T.(Gladys) Freund , Wayne ( Marguerite) Freund, and his sister:  Betty (Dale) Farbo, all of Cando, his sister Sr. Dominica O.S.B of St. Joseph, MN and many nieces and nephews.

Dear Freund Family,

My deepest sympathy at the news of Jack's death.  Although I didn't know him well, I knew what a wonderful person he was through the friendship he had with my mother at FHA.  She respected him greatly and talked often about his kindness as well as his skill at his job.  I will never forget how very kind Jack was to our family when my brother, John, died suddenly.  He was so helpful as we tried to understand the 'ins and outs' of the military regulations dealing with a death.  You all must be missing him so much.  Heaven certainly gained a wonderful addition to its celestial music.

To Joyce and Family: Jack was one of those Cando people who had not only a heart for music and a lifetime of serving his beloved Sacred Heart Church as organist and pianist, but he spread out his talents with the community at-large. As I read his formal obituary, it seems obvious that Jack was a man with compassion for others. I know two of my own friends who, in their older years, received great help many times over from Jack. He and I exchanged many conversations about music over the years as well as much humor. He was so good-looking from his youngest days, as well! A man of deep faith, good humor, service to others in the community, hard-working habits, funny stories. He will be sorely missed, that's for sure. God bless Jack's memory!
