Obituary

Kay Joyce (Holmberg) Lutz, 83, Carrington, ND formerly of Cando, ND, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at Golden Acres Manor in Carrington, ND.  Visitation will be on Friday, July 7, 2023, from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home in Cando, ND.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the River of Life Assembly of God Church in Devils Lake, ND with Pastor Lucas Aufenkamp officiating.

Kay was born in Faulkton, SD. June 3rd, 1940. She graduated from Faulkton High School in 1958. She played several different instruments in the band but loved playing the piccolo. She loved to swim and ride bike as a child which continued into adulthood. She married Gail Lutz on January 23, 1959. She graduated from Northern State University with an Elementary Education degree with a minor in History. She taught in Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota before moving to Cando in 1975 to start the kindergarten program. She continued teaching until she retired in May 2003. She touched the lives of over 1,000 students during her career. The last few years of teaching she was on crutches and then in an electric scooter due to having polio when she was 6 years old. Despite her challenges, she never let anything stop her from doing the things she loved. The Shriner's Hospital and March of Dimes assisted during her younger years. Family was so very important to her. She had 3 children, David Lutz of Forest Lake, MN (his kids are Chris (Sarah) Lutz of Minneapolis, MN, Andrew (Emmy) Lutz of Afton, MN, Derek (Kristi) Lutz of St. Louis Park, MN, and Danielle (Matt) Wheeler of Haywood, WI, and 5 great-grandchildren. Terry (Ruth) Lutz (Tiffany is their daughter) of Cando, ND, and Kimberly (Michael) Nelson of Cando, ND. The following grandchildren which are Michael and Kimberly's children spent a lot of time with Kay after Gail passed away in 2005. Dusty (Brad) Bjork (their kids are Michael Johnson, Logan, Kaytlyn, and Jase Bjork) of Post Falls, Idaho, Brandon (Michelle) Nelson (their kids are Aroura, Zobias and Illyana) of Devils Lake, ND.

She is survived by a sister Lynn Dahl of Aberdeen, SD, nieces and nephews Wendy (Steve) Keszler of Geneva, MN, Dawn Lintvedt of Presho, SD, Teddi (Jonathon) Dalton of Aberdeen, SD, Richard (Kaci) Dahl of Sioux Falls, SD and many great nieces and nephews.

Kay loved reading romance novels, coloring, playing video games, online games, traveling, attending Timberwolves games, playing cards, watching fireworks, Christmas because of the lights and helping others out whenever she could.

She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Charles and Anna Holmberg from Faulkton, SD and maternal grandparents PJ and Clara Ruhaak, parents Elmer (Ted) and Maxine Holmberg all of Faulkton, SD and a brother Richard Holmberg of Munster, IN and her husband, Gail Lutz of Cando, ND.

Honorary Urn Bearers– Tiffany Lutz, Dusty & Brad Bjork, Brandon & Michelle Nelson, Mike Hiott, Grandchildren Michael Johnson, Logan, Kaytlyn and Jase Bjork and Aroura, Zobias and Illyana Nelson.
