Kenneth McGregor Wakefield, 94, Cando, ND, passed away Saturday, November 17, 2018, at his home in Cando, ND, under the care of Altru Hospice. Services will be private with loved ones and family. A memorial for friends and Colleagues will be planned for a later date.
Kenneth M. Wakefield was born January 27, 1924, in Gladstone, Manitoba, to John and Margaret (McGregor) Wakefield. He moved to Boissevain, Manitoba where Ken attended school. Then the family moved to Winnipeg. Ken attended The University of Manitoba, receiving his medical degree in 1948. His internship was completed at St. Boniface Hospital in St. Boniface, Manitoba.
Upon graduation, Dr. Wakefield was employed by the Hollenberg Clinic in Winnipeg. He moved to Gackle, ND in 1950, where he practiced medicine and established the Hill-Burton Hospital. In 1951, he opened Wakefield Clinic in Cooperstown, ND, and was instrumental in opening the Griggs County Hospital in 1952. During this time, he was president of the North Dakota Mental Health Association, as well as being active in many local organizations. After 28 years of private practice in Cooperstown, he moved his family to Fargo, ND where he began his teaching career in Family Medicine as Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program in Fargo for UND. He later became acting Director of the program. During his tenure at UND, he was active in numerous organizations, which included Director of the UND Medical Foundation, member of the Ad Hoc Committee on Impaired Physicians of the ND Medical Association, a consultant and advisor to the ND Family Nurse Practitioner Committee Association, and Chaplaincy Advisor Committee of St Luke's Hospital (Sanford). Dr. Wakefield was also a staff doctor at the three major hospitals in Fargo. In 1982 Dr. Wakefield moved to Johnson City, TN, where he was employed as Associate Director of the Family Practice Residency Program at the Quillin-Dishner College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. Here he held seminars on "Pain and Suffering," and was a member of the House Staff Review Committee for the Veterans Administration. In 1984 Dr. Wakefield was hired by USC Family Medicine Residency Program at California Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. During this time, he was grandfathered into Geriatric Medicine. That allowed him to be double boarded in Family Medicine and Geriatrics. 1986 brought him to Wichita, Kansas, where he wrote a grant to establish a Geriatrics Fellowship Program for KU. It was in Wichita that he accomplished his 50-year career goal as a physician. At age 75, he retired as Director of the Geriatric Program at KU, as well as a faculty member of the residency program. In Wichita, he was medical director of the Cherry Creek Nursing Home facility, served on the ethics committee for Via Christi Medical Center, as well as organizing on-going yearly seminars on geriatrics.
He married Gayla Hoffman on February 13, 1982. He and Gayla have lived in Cando, ND since 1999.
Ken is survived by his wife Gayla; his sons John (Dawn), Binford, ND (Red Willow Resort), Charles, Minneapolis, MN, Dawn (Tom) Hartl, New Rockford, ND, and a step daughter Sherry (Aric) Peterson, Rogers, MN, and his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Albert and Loren.
We have heard of others speak of Ken as a brilliant mind. That mind has now become silent. It is as peace. Ken is at peace. His legacy will live on through his family, colleagues, and the lives of those he has touched throughout his 94 years on this earth. He had hundreds of books, all of which he had read at least once. For most of his life, he studied and wrote about the evolution of religion and the effects it had on cultures mankind. He lived a full productive life. He will be missed.
