LeRoy Leo Hoffert, 75, of Cando, ND passed away Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:00 AM Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home in Cando, ND with Fr. Daniel Musgrave celebrating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. LeRoy will be laid to rest at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Cando, ND next to his father John, mother Rose and brother Gary Hoffert.  Casket Bearers are LeRoy's family and friends. Military Honors will be provided by Hal Parker Post #79 Cando American Legion and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.

The family requests that memorials be given to the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

LeRoy Hoffert was the son of John and Rose (Selensky) Hoffert. He was born on the family farm near Brinsmade, North Dakota on December 6, 1942. He was a graduate of Cando High School.

At the age of 17 LeRoy enlisted in the United State Navy. During his time the Navy took him to Japan, Okinawa and the Philippines. In July of 1962, he was in Mexico, Chilie, and Trinidad. He was deployed for 43 days at sea to help with the naval blockades during the Cuban Missile Crisis. LeRoy served his country with pride. LeRoy was a proud member of the Hal Parker Post #79 Cando American Legion.

LeRoy worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as a Sectionman, Machine & Crane Operator and finally a Section Boss. He proudly worked for Burlington Northern for 32 years, retiring in 2002. He has always had a great pride for his work on the railroad.

LeRoy was married to Cindy Benson for a time. During that time he had three children, John, Jackie (Allen) and Jodi. He was very proud of his children.

LeRoy enjoyed a special relationship with his mother Rose Hoffert. LeRoy was proud to accompany his mother Rose, a Gold-Star Mother, to the Memorial Day Parades in Cando, where they remembered and honored LeRoy's brother, Gary, who was lost while in the service.

LeRoy enjoyed playing pinochle, cribbage and whist with friends, family and neighbors. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, reminiscing, sharing stories, sharing a good meal and some laughs.

LeRoy spent the past three and half years in care facilities in Grand Forks and Devils Lake, North Dakota, but his heart was always at his home in Cando.

LeRoy is survived by his son, John; daughters, Jackie and Jodi; eleven grandchildren, Ashley, Deserae, Lindsey, Justin, Stephanie, Nathan, Bethany, Desiree, John, Daniel, and Linus; four great grandchildren; siblings, Ardelle (Ron), Linda (Terry) and Larry (Jolene); five nieces and five nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Rose and John Hoffert and his brother Gary Hoffert.
