Leroy Joseph Vandal, 83, of Cando, ND, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at the Towner County Medical Center in Cando, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 28, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando, ND with Fr. Joseph D'Aco officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Cando. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. Casket bearers will be Lee Vandal, Jared Vandal, Brennan Bennington, Charles Bennington, Ben Scilley, John Rosinski and Seth Syverson. Kelsey Vandal will be the reader and gift bearers will be Dani Bennington and Alli Vandal. Music will be provided by Gladys Fluge, Tom Freund, Jessica Rosinski, Kristin Syverson and Courtney Scilley. Military honors will be accorded by the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.
Leroy was born January 29, 1933 in Rolla, ND to George and Edith (Patro) Vandal. After graduating from Rolla High School in 1950, he farmed with his family. Leroy served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958, serving one year in Korea. He attended North Dakota School of Forestry in Bottineau, ND where he received his two year degree in horticulture. On June 4, 1960 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Brennan in Rolla, ND. The couple lived one year in Santa Ana, CA and he worked for an orchid grove. In 1961 they moved to Grand Forks and he worked for WY's garden and UND as a grounds foreman. In 1971 the family purchased Morris Floral and Cando Greenhouse and operated the business until 1990. After the sale of the business, Leroy worked at Towner County Living Center until his retirement.
Leroy is survived by his wife Dorothy of Cando, ND; his son Bob (Mary) Vandal of Rolla, ND; daughters Cyndi (Jeff) Farbo of Cando, ND; Kristi (Brent) Aasland of Fargo, ND; nine grandchildren, one step grandchild, seven great-grandchildren, one step great-grandchild, brother Joe Vandal of Rolla, ND and a sister Esther Flodin of Minneapolis, MN.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Conrad.
