Louise Hoffman, 95, Cando, ND passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Towner County Living Center in Cando, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cando, with Fr. Joseph D'Aco, celebrant. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Cando. Casket bearers will be her grandchildren: Tara Gurney, Lance Faul, Adam Hoffman, Sherry Peterson, Jay Metzger and Josh Hoffman. Music will be provided by Gladys Fluge, Adam Hoffman and the Sacred Heart Choir. Visitation will be at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Vigil prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Louise M. Hartl was born March 13, 1919, in Altoona, PA, to German imigrants, Alois and Anna (Shaudeck) Hartl. The family moved to North Dakota when Louise was about a year old. Her parents purchased a farm in Coolin Township in 1927 where Louise loved to round up the cattle with her pony, Buddy. It was while living at the farm that she attended Coolin School through eighth grade. Because the teacher lived with them, Louise was able to take one year of correspondence to complete the ninth grade. Louise and her sister Lena (Overby) loved to sing and yodel. They sang and yodeled at "barn dances" and won many contests. The highlight of their "career" came when they won a contest to sing for the radio station in Devils Lake.
Louise married William (Willie) Hoffman at St. Joseph Cathedral in San Diego, CA, on October 15, 1942, Willie's birthday. After Willie's Army tour of duty, the couple returned to North Dakota where they purchased Cando Dry Cleaners from Joe and Rosie Hoffman and continued to own the business until 1976, when the business was sold due to Willie's declining health. Willie died in 1978 at the age of 65. Louise continued to live in her own home until the age of 94.
Louise was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of Christian Mothers. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member for 79 years.
Louise is survived by her sister Mary Hocking, Minot, ND; sisters-in-law, Louise Hartl and Elizabeth Hartl; four children: Gayla (Ken) Wakefield, Cando, ND; Roseann (Mark) Metzger, Kalispell, MT; Lola (Jeff) Faul, Harvey, ND; and Bill (Sandi) Hoffman, Bottineau, ND. Grandchildren: Tara Gurney, Des Moines, IA; Sherry Peterson, Rogers, MN; Lance Faul, Harvey, ND; Jay Metger, Kalispell, MT; Adam Hoffman, Minot, ND; Josh Hoffman, Carrington, ND; 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alois and Anna; husband, Willie; sisters, Ann Bonn, Lena Overby, Agnes Hartl; brothers, Joe Hartl, Frank Hartl, Alfred Hartl, and Alois Hartl; and a grandson, Mark William Metzger.
