Margaret M. Braaten, 75, of Devils Lake, ND and formerly of Cando, ND, passed away Thursday, September 6, 2018 in Cando, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devils Lake, ND with the Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass. Visitation will begin at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Burial will be at the Tolna Cemetery in Tolna, ND. Marti Nelson will be the Lector. Music will be provided by JoDee Lagein and Lynne Webster. Casket Bearers will be Richard Wagner, Jay Welsh, Jared Roach, Robert Nelson, Joshua McCartney and Robert LaMotte.

Margaret Halstead was born October 18, 1942 in Devils Lake, ND to William and Ragna (Skogli) Halstead. She graduated from Tolna High School and was united in marriage to Larry Braaten on May 22, 1959. They made their home on the Loken's Farm. They welcomed a daughter, Darla, to the family and later moved to Cando where Margaret was employed at the nursing home as a cook. They welcomed a son, Daniel, to the family. Daniel passed away just months later. They moved to the Earl Hofstaad Farm in rural Starkweather, ND in 1966. In 1974, they returned to Cando. Margaret had a very strong work ethic and worked at various jobs including cooking at the Cando School, bartending at Cando Bar, and working at JD Styles, Cando Drug & Gift and Neumann Rexall Drug. After Larry passed away in 2013, Margaret moved to Devils Lake, ND and worked at Fashion Boutique and St. Joseph's Closet. She was a life member of the VFW 756 auxiliary and held a trustee position. Margaret loved to cook, garden, shop, enjoy music, work and spend quality time with family and friends.

Margaret is survived by her daughter Darla Moore (Rick Wagner) of Cando, ND; two granddaughters; Darby (Jay) Welsh of Grand Forks, ND and Abby (Jared) Roach of Grand Forks, ND; three great-grandchildren; Daphne, Judd and Vada Welsh; and companion Robert LaMotte of Devils Lake, ND.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband Larry, son Daniel, sisters Helen, Irene, Shirley, Gladys, Dolores, Virginia, Arlene (infant), Myrtle, brothers Neil (Bud), Eugene, Henry, Arney, Don, Ray and Lester.
