Obituary

Raymond Arnold Bergdahl, 89 of Cando, ND passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Funeral Services will be on Monday, October 24, 2016 at 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church in Cando with Pastor Rick Craig officiating. Visitation will be held at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando on Sunday, October 23, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Family Service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation on Monday will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Casket bearers will be Eric Carlson, Nathan Carlson, Brennen Bergdahl, Aaron Bergdahl, Casey Bergdahl and Kevin Klipfel. Honorary bearers will be his great-grandchildren, Sidney Carlson, Kinzie Carlson and Carter Carlson. Burial will be at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando, ND. Military Honors will be provided by the Hal Parker Post #79 Cando American Legion and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.

Raymond Arnold Bergdahl was born May 9, 1927 in Cando, ND to Alfred and Elsie (Carlson) Bergdahl. He attended Metcalf School. He began working for many area farmers due to the man power shortage during the war. He entered the United States Army at the age of 18, where he served as a Sergeant during the occupation in Japan. Raymond was honorably discharged on February 6, 1947 and moved back to North Dakota which he called 'God's Country'. Following the war, he worked with his father learning painting and papering. On June 17, 1949 Raymond married Arlene Klipfel in Cando.

Raymond worked various jobs as a young man including carpentry, cement, block laying and plastering with Efner Nelson. He also worked at Haas Motors (Ford Garage) Service and operated a service station with his brother, Floyd. While working at John Deer Implement from 8 AM to 6 PM, Raymond 'moonlighted' with Bud Garber installing flooring. He then went into business with Bud Garber at B & G Tile for several years before starting his own business, Ray's Carpet and Linoleum.

Raymond enjoyed playing hockey with the Cando Odnacs, golfing, woodworking, playing cards, dancing and trips with Fargo Glass & Paint, cruising with DeLynn and Ken and attending family activities and sporting events. Raymond was a member of the Cando Fire Department and the Hal Parker Post #79 Cando American Legion. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church where he was involved in various committees and a board member of the Cando Golf Club.

Raymond is survived by his wife of 67 years, Arlene; children, DeLynn (Kenneth) Carlson of Langdon, ND, Roddy Bergdahl of West Fargo, ND and Brad (Debbie) Bergdahl of Cando, ND; grandchildren, Eric Carlson of Fargo, ND, Nathan (Amanda) Carlson of West Fargo, ND, Casey Bergdahl of West Fargo, ND, Brennen Bergdahl of Grand Forks, ND and Aaron Bergdahl of Britton, SD; great-grandchildren, Sidney Carlson of Grand Forks, ND, Kinzie Carlson of Grand Forks, ND and Carter Carlson of West Fargo, ND; sisters, Delores Lyons of Grand Rapids, MN and Marlene Berge of Fargo, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Elsie (Carlson) Bergdahl; siblings, Floyd Bergdahl , Joyce, Veora and an infant daughter.
