Richard E. "Dick" Anderson, 66, of Belle Plaine, MN, formerly of Cando, ND entered eternal rest with his family by his side at his home in Belle Plaine on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 under the loving care of his family and hospice. Services will be 10:00 am Monday, June 24, 2013 at Cando Lutheran Church in Cando with Rev. Bonnie Weaver officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando. Visitation will be at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00p.m. Visitation on Monday will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Casket bearers will be Justin Anderson, Jeff Farbo, Casper Beck, Trent Anderson, Scott Murch, Ralph Matthews, Mitch Hokamp Jerry Laturnus and Rocky Teubner. Honorary bearers will be Harlan Wagenman and Dale Farbo. Music will be from Catherine Anfinson, Darci Haugeberg and Amanda Bragg. Military Honors will be provided by the Hal Parker Post #79 Cando American Legion and North Dakota Military Funeral Honors.

Richard was born August 18, 1946 in Devils Lake, North Dakota to Kenneth and Evelyn Smith Anderson. Richard grew up on the family farm and graduated from Cando High School in 1964. After graduation Richard attended Wahpeton State School of Science for architectural drafting. After college he worked for Englehart's of Devils Lake and John Hoffart of Cando. In 1966 Richard's love for the farm brought him back to Cando and began his farming career in partnership with his dad. Shortly after starting this venture, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He proudly served his country for two years during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in July 1968.

Shortly before he was drafted he met the love of his life Janice Amundson of Larimore, N.D. They were married September 24, 1967 at Fort Hood, Texas days before he was deployed to Vietnam. Upon Richard's discharge from the service he returned to Cando and began his 40 year farming career side by side with his wife and in partnership with his dad.Richard was proud of his two sons, Troy and Brent, born to this union. Troy returned to farm with his dad after college.

Because of his declining health, Richard retired from farming in 2006, and moved to Belle Plaine to be close to his sons and their families.

Richard's greatest joy was being a farmer. He also was an excellent woodworker and took pride in the many pieces of furniture he made for his family and friends. He just finished his last project, a hope chest for his youngest granddaughter, three weeks before his death. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and was known for always teasing and playing jokes on them.

Richard served on the Cando School Board and was proud to give his sons their diplomas when they graduated. He served on the Board of Directors for Farm Credit Services for many years, and was also a 4-H leader.

Richard is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 46 years Jan, son Troy and his wife Rhonda of Belle Plaine, son Brent and his wife Tonya of Prior Lake, grandchildren Justin, Allyson and Makayla of Belle Plaine, Mackenzie, Alexa and Jax of Prior Lake, brother Ron (Linda) of Cando, mother-in-law Francis Amundson of Gilby, N.D. and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and father-in-law Walter Amundson.

My sympathy to this kind man's family.  My mother and his were friends and we went to the same church, so I have always known him  though I am a few years younger.  His kindness to others in the high school is what stands out in my memory. He was truly a 'gentle giant'.
