Obituary

Robert "Bob" McIntosh Lord, 86, was born February 12, 1931, in Cando, ND, to Vine David and Velma (Thom) Lord. He was injured in a fall and passed away on February 23, 2017, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 PM Sunday, August 13, 2017 at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Cando, ND.  A lunch will follow at the Masonic Lodge in Cando, ND.

Bob graduated from Cando Public High School in 1949. He became a very accomplished pianist studying with his mother and his Aunt Laveta. He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy by Senator William Langer. After Annapolis, he attended the University of North Dakota, joined ROTC and the North Dakota National Guard, and was drafted to active military service in 1953. He was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as a radio announcer until he was honorably discharged in 1955.

He came back to Cando and joined his father at the Vine D. Lord Insurance Agency. He served as Secretary of the Cando Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Cando Firemen, and a member of the Cando Gun Club. He was the Towner County Chairman of the Red Cross and a District Director for the Boy Scouts.

Robert joined the Cando Chapter #18 Royal Arch Masonry in 1957 and was a 60-year member of the Cando Masonic Fraternity, serving as Master of Cando Lodge #40 in 1961.   He was Potentate of the Shrine KEM Temple in 1968. He was a member of the Cando Order of Eastern Star #29 and was Worthy Patron in 1966.

Bob married Shelley Anderson on November 07, 1958, in Cando, ND, at his parents' home. Bob and Shelley raised two boys in Cando.

Bob had many friends he cherished. He spent much of his time visiting people around the community, delivering carrot cakes he had baked. He was an avid reader. He enjoyed listening to jazz and loved to cook; he was always experimenting with different soup recipes. Over the years, he perfected his salsa recipe and enjoyed sharing his bountiful garden harvests with jars of salsa for family and friends. He truly loved the outdoors, spending as much time hunting, fishing and gardening as he could.

Bob is survived by his wife, Shelley; his sons, R. Winston (Angie) Lord, Fargo, ND, and John (DeeAnn) Lord, Golden, CO; his brother, Richard (Myrna) Lord, Cando, ND; his four grandchildren: Chloe, Foster, Mason and Avery; and several nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Marilyn.
