Vivian B. Helland passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at Clarkson Health Care in Rapid City, SD.
Vivian was born April 26, 1921 to Harold and Mary (Krile) Odegaard in Towner County, North Dakota. She was raised on a farm south of Egeland, ND. She attended school in Egeland and received her teaching certificate from Minot State College.
After college she taught in a one room country school near Picton, ND until her marriage to Stenard Helland on November 1, 1942. Moving to a farm north of Egeland, Vivian was a full participant in the farming operation.
Vivian was an active member in the community. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Egeland participating in many church activities. She was a 4-H leader for over 30 years and was awarded the North Dakota Pioneer 4-H Leader Award. She taught school in Egeland from 1969-1977. Vivian was involved with ND Republican Women. While state president she was invited to the White House to attend a tea with Nancy Reagan. She was a delegate to the National Republican Convention in 1984.
Following the death of Stenard, Vivian moved to Rapid City, SD in 1991. She was involved in Pennington County Republican Women, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Black Hills Symphony League, and volunteer work reading for the blind. She enjoyed travel opportunities often visiting family and friends in the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. She became a member of the SD Century Club.
Vivian is survived by brother Clayton Odegaard, Polson, MT; daughters Yvonne (Charles) Erickson, Battle Lake, MN; Linda Henry, Rapid City, SD; Wanda Moos, Rapid City, SD; and Susan Schindler, North Bend, OR; 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Proceeding her in death were her husband Stenard, son Thomas, brothers Clifford and Dennis Odegaard, sons-in-law David Henry and Douglas Schindler, and grandson Craig Henry.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28th, 2025 at 1:30 pm at the Lakeview Lutheran Church in Egeland, ND followed by a reception at the Egeland Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St Jude's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or Camp Grassick, PO Box F, Dawson, ND 58428.
