Bill was born in Cando to John Sr and LaVonne Steele on September 6th, 1948.  He was the second of six children of John and LaVonne's.  As a kid Bill liked helping his grandpa Welch at the bakery, working out at the farm with his uncle Ed, and working at his dad's service station with his siblings.  He attended school in Cando and graduated in 1966, he went on to college at Lake Region State College and NDSU.  Bill was very proud to have served his country in the Army during Vietnam and was discharged in 1971.

Bill married Renae (Rainy) Veum in 1967. They had three children; Genia, Shane, and Jera. Although they divorced, he remained friends with Rainy until her death in 1996.  He raised their three children in Fargo until they were young adults, then he reconnected with an old flame his kids had introduced him to many years before.  He got married to Corless Apperson and moved to New York state with his company.

Bill started working for Xerox in 1971, a career that took him from Fargo to New York and lasted nearly 35 years.  He loved working for Xerox, especially at their headquarters in Rochester NY in their Engineering Support Team (Tiger Team).  His colleagues at Xerox were family and many were lifelong friends, still getting together as often as they could.

Bill retired from Xerox in 2005 and moved from NY back to Fargo where he worked for Microsoft for several years.  In 2018 he bought his parents house in Cando, that he and his siblings helped build in 1950's, and officially "retired" a few years later moving back into that house.  Bill wasn't one to be idle, he always needed to be doing something or helping someone.  Whether it was helping one of his kids or grandkids with a project, a car, or motorcycle, or working out at the Steele farm with his brother David.

Bill's hobbies included working on the family farm, playing (cheating) cards with anyone who would play with him, bowling, hunting, golfing, softball, model cars, classic cars, car races and motorcycles.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, John & LaVonne Steele; his two ex-wives, and his brother, Thomas Steele.  He is survived by his children, Genia (Tony) Steele of Brooklyn Park, MN, Shane Steele of Minneapolis, MN, and Jera Steele of Minot, ND;   his brothers, John (Trudy Haas) Steele Jr of Sun City, Tx, Terry Steele of Clyde, TX, and David Steele of Cando ND;  his sister, Sandra Geiger of Cando, ND; a very dear family friend Sheila Kapaun of Cando, ND;  his grandchildren, Gennifer, Seth, Al, Jordyn, Matt, Colby, Morgen, Isiah, Josiah, and Jeramiah; and 17 Great Grandchildren along with many beloved aunts, uncles,  cousins, nieces and nephews.
